Your effective processing rate is total fees divided by total volume, expressed as a percentage. It is the single most useful number for comparing processors — but it does not reveal whether fees are structured fairly, whether you are on interchange-plus or tiered pricing, or whether per-transaction fees are inflated. Use this calculator as a starting point, then request a free statement review for the full picture.

What this calculator measures
Effective rate = total fees ÷ total volume. It collapses every fee — percentage, per-transaction, monthly, and incidental — into one number you can compare across processors.
What it does not prove: a low effective rate can still hide a poorly structured contract. Tiered pricing, non-qualified surcharges, and inflated per-transaction fees can all produce a "reasonable" blended rate while costing you more than interchange-plus would.
Card-present vs. card-not-present: in-person transactions carry lower interchange rates. A business that is 90% card-present should expect a lower effective rate than one that is 90% online — comparing the two numbers directly is misleading.
Average ticket matters: per-transaction fees (e.g. $0.10 per swipe) have a larger impact on small-ticket businesses. A $5 average ticket with a $0.10 fee adds 2% before the percentage rate is even applied.
How to find these numbers on your statement
Processor statements vary in format, but the key figures appear on every one. Here is where to look.
Monthly volume
Usually labeled "Total Sales," "Gross Sales," or "Total Volume" — often on the first or last summary page.
Transaction count
Look for "Total Transactions," "Transaction Count," or "# of Items." May be broken out by card type.
Total fees
The sum of all fee line items. Look for a "Total Fees," "Total Charges," or "Amount Due" line. Include monthly fees, PCI fees, and any incidental charges.
Card-present percentage
Statements that break out "Swiped," "Dipped," or "Tapped" vs. "Keyed" or "Card Not Present" let you calculate this directly. If not shown, estimate based on your business type.
